Under 11 b County Final match report

Two Mile Borris 2-4 Cahir 2-3

Two-Mile-Borris were counting down the days until Tuesday the 9th of November came. It was county final day. Our school was in a very upbeat mood especially as our opponents were Cahir. Mrs Doherty our new principal taught in Cahir last year and knew those lads very well and knew that they can play great football. So as a result we were even more determined than ever not to let her down and to win and bring back the title to Borris. We arrived in New Inn in great numbers led by our teacher and trainer, Mr Liam McCullagh, with flags and banners galore. The wind was howling and the rain bursting to let go, as the referee blew the whistle and the game was on. A few minutes into the game our captain James Dillon got the opening score with a magnificent point. Just what we needed to settle the nerves and get on with the game. A quick kickout sent the ball down to the Cahir forwards who scored a point which was soon followed by another which put Cahir into the lead. PJ Tunstall was solid in goals while Michael Murphy and Michael Maher both stood like blocks in defence and Rory Darmody fed the forwards with plenty of ball throughout the game and fought hard. David O’ Donnell sent in a beauty of a ball into James hands, which he took great care of and curled the ball past Cahir’s goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The Cahir lads fought back well and the defence was hard to break down on such a bitterly blustery day. Cahir gave all they could and they battled on to score a point which led to a goal. With the score at half time Cahir 1-3 Borris1-1 it was all to play for in the second half.

A couple of minutes into the second half James Dillon kicked over a terrific point from 25 yards out. However Cahir came back at us with another goal. The Borris lads fought extremely well and were awarded a free. Jack Fallon lobbed in a lovely ball and Declan Ryan was there to put the finishing touch with a whopper of a goal. A few minutes later we got a free just outside the box and the ball was quickly struck over by D Maher which equalised the game. Shouts of jubilation rang out from the Borris crowd and with minutes left tension was mounting . The clocks were ticking and my heart was too. Sean Mockler and David Ryan were holding firm in defence while in attack Conor Cummins, Sean O Meara and Darren Flood worked tirelessly for the winning score. A minute left in the game and the ball hopped slowly out for 45. Jack Fallon kicked a firing ball into James and with an almighty kick James put his heart and soul into it and in brilliant style he style he struck it over the bar . The crowd went wild as the ref Michael Heffernan blew the final whistle. Great credit is due to our teacher Mr McCullagh who works tirelessly throughout the year and this makes us proud as a team to have him as our trainer and our teacher .Thanks also to our great captain James Dillon and to our supporters who turn up so often and without them it would not be the same. Great credit is also due to our overall team who fought hard on such a bitterly cold day .What a great ending to a day and one we won’t forget for a while!! Hard luck also to the brave Cahir BNS team who were a credit to their school and parents.
