FAI 5 a side Soccer competition

29 Boys from 4th to 6th class took part in the FAI 5 a side soccer blitz in Newhill this week. On Wednesday the 3 teams represented our school in the annual competition and acquitted themselves excellently. Everybody who took to the field did so with great skill and endeavour and thoroughly enjoyed the day as a result. The third team made up of 5th and 4th classes had terrific games against Newport, Kilsheelan and Scoil Iosaf Naofa. The second team captained by Shane Burke and Tom Maher, together with Liam McDonagh, Sean Tunstall, Michael O Donnell, John Lanigan, Cathal Corcoran and Dillon Ryan competed against Holy Trinity, Gaelscoil Aonach and Carrick. Thanks to Rory Dillon for once again giving his time to help out this team. Our first team captained by Jack Morrissey, overcame Holy Trinity, Grange and Clerihan to qualify for the second round the following day.

We returned to Newhill on Thursday ready to face the other 7 teams who had topped their groups the day before. We were drawn to play Ballylooby, Corville and Newport. After a shaky 4-3 victory in the opening game against Ballylooby we steadily improved and maintained our 100% record to progress to the final. Luckily we saved our best football for the final and had a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Gaelscoil Aonach which meant we were the County Champions for the first time in over ten years. Great credit must go to the players, Jack, Andrew, Lewis, Owen, Max, Owen, Kevin and Darren for their skill and determination and also to the coaches, TJ, Joe, Vinnie, and Jack who made the victory possible. We must also acknowledge Shane, Niall and the other coaches who have being coaching the kids on Fridays for the last few months. The benefit of the vocal home support was also a factor and we look forward to seeing you in Nenagh on May 7th for the Munster Finals.
